Doppler Radar of Hurricane Katrina

This is a Doppler Radar image of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when it hit Louisiana. Doppler Radar is used to track and determine the location and velocity of storms, clouds, precipitation, and etc. It tracks storms and clouds by using the Doppler effect (difference between the observed frequency and the emitted frequency of a wave). The color scale in this image shows the intensity of the hurricane in decibels. This image of Hurricane Katrina shows that the outer part of it is at 15 dBZ, which is about a category 3 hurricane. Moving inward, it is at a mix between 20-40 dBZ, which can range from a category 4 to a category 8 hurricane. The red patches in the center of the hurricane reaches about 50 dBZ, making Hurricane Katrina a category 10.
