Doppler Radar of Hurricane Katrina

http://acartographicalworld.blogspot.com/2010/12/doppler-radar.html

This is a Doppler Radar image of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when it hit Louisiana. Doppler Radar is used to track and determine the location and velocity of storms, clouds, precipitation, and etc. It tracks storms and clouds by using the Doppler effect (difference between the observed frequency and the emitted frequency of a wave). The color scale in this image shows the intensity of the hurricane in decibels. This image of Hurricane Katrina shows that the outer part of it is at 15 dBZ, which is about a category 3 hurricane. Moving inward, it is at a mix between 20-40 dBZ, which can range from a category 4 to a category 8 hurricane. The red patches in the center of the hurricane reaches about 50 dBZ, making Hurricane Katrina a category 10.

Choropleth maps summarizes the distribution of a subject based on boundary lines. This is a choropleth map of Florida and it illustrates the percentage of Hispanic or Latino people that live in the state of Florida by each county. It shows that there are about 1.5%-7.5% of Hispanics or Latinos living in Northern Florida (eg. Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, etc.). But there are significant number of Hispanics and Latinos living in the Southern tip of Florida. This could partly be because there isn't as much border control stopping them from coming in especially on the coasts of Florida.

Topographic map of Haiti

http://www.omnimap.com/cgi/graphic.pl?images/for-topo/67-1058a.jpg

This topographic map is a map of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. The map was made by the U.S. Army. It shows the configuration of the land surface of Haiti by including contours lines, woodlands, urbanized areas, and the surrounding water. The urbanized areas are in pink while the contour lines are brown. The contour lines show the elevation and the contour interval is 20 meters. I chose to use a map of Haiti because it is where my family is from.
